Exploring Editorial Design
As part of the module "Word and Image", second-semester students of our BA Graphic Design & Visual Communication program explored the multifaceted world of editorial design led by Prof. Alexander Tibus.
The module "Word and Image" teaches editorial design, guiding students through the intricate process of creating a book from concept to physical prototype. The students define a book format, make the layout structure, decide about fonts and colors, and create their imagery. This includes experimentation with photography, illustration techniques, and AI-generated images. The module also includes the design of the book cover, careful selection of papers, and bookbinding.
As part of their coursework, students undertook a "Book Design" project, which involved designing a complete physical prototype of a book based on the text "The Chicago of Europe" by Mark Twain. This project allowed students to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the module and encouraged them to explore their creativity and innovation.
