Cyrillize it! by Yana Vekshyna
We are proud to announce that our 2020 BA graduate (Graphic Design & Visual Communication) Yana Vekshyna has transformed her excellent bachelor’s thesis (supvs. Prof. Alexander Tibus and Ben Wittner) into a fully published book!
Titled “Cyrillize it! A guide on Cyrillic typography for graphic designers”, it promises to be a worthy addition to bookstores and libraries everywhere, especially our own Hans-Dieter-Klingemann Library.
The Swiss-based publishing house Niggli has worked with Yana to deliver this book through a “playful and esthetically appealing design,” which draws comparisons between Latin and Cyrillic script. This approach, including incredible examples of modern design, is perfectly prepared for readers unfamiliar with the Eurasian script system or its languages.
This creatively compiled work offers practical and helpful guidance on how to design using a script that you can't read. Further insights into the relevance, history, and rules behind the script itself (as well as its fascinating examples) also make this book of particular interest to non-designers who are attracted to Cyrillic script and related cultures.
We are proud of Yana's achievement and wish her all the best!
