Designing books
The second-semester Graphic Design and Visual Communication students started their week by visiting a seminar at the Kunstbibliothek (art library) in Berlin, initiated by Prof. Alexander Tibus. Dr. Michael Lailach, Head of the Collection of Book Art and Media Art, as well as the archive of the Marzona Collection, led the seminar. He presented eleven books dating back from 1486 to 2006. Dr. Lailach conveyed historical contexts, conceptual aspects, and the motivations of the authors, designers, and artists behind Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and Barbara Kruger, to name only a few. The seminar is an integral part of the course Word and Image. It teaches the students how to design books, from scratch to final prototypes.
