Talk with Prof. Dr. Florian Artinger
Prof. Dr. Florian Artinger, Head of B.A. Digital Business & Management at Berlin International, delivered an inspirational talk at the Summer Institute for Bounded Rationality at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.
The Summer Institute provides an interdisciplinary platform for sharing knowledge and discussing the importance and application of simple solutions to complex problems. Participants are introduced to research practices from different disciplines. Seminars, talks, panel discussions, workshops, poster sessions, and informal events encourage participants to learn and develop new ideas while reflecting upon the widespread assumption that complicated problems necessitate complex solutions.
About the talk
Given the increasing volume of data available in a digitalized world, it seems that the space where heuristics are ecologically rational is shrinking considerably. This talk showcases three different prediction exercises, all of which include the use of heuristics. It will outline the surprising power of heuristics, even in the context of “Big Data,” which opens the possibility to truly combine human and machine intelligence for superior performance. At the same time, many decisions remain in the realm of uncertainty where prediction becomes hard or even impossible. The talk will shed light onto the question of what people do in such unpredictable contexts and the extent to which rational choice and satisficing models can explain behavior.
