Interview with Prof. Karsten Huneck
“Hello, everybody! I’m Karsten Huneck, an architecture and construction professor and the BA Architecture program head.
About Berlin International
What is truly unique and special about BI is that it is absolutely international. It is the only real international university I know, even in other countries I have taught. Here, we can truly say that we have students from everywhere. In a cohort of 40 students, we have 33 nationalities. I would say this is pretty special, along with the fact that it is an English-teaching university.
The university offers a holistic program and also interdisciplinary offerings, so we are actually teaching creative studies between architecture, interior design, and graphic design. So the students also get insight into other disciplines. But, of course, above all, it is the whole atmosphere of living in Berlin as well as studying with all these other nationalities that makes it very special.
This is in line with my earlier point that you do not find many places in Germany where you have this variety of students. They all bring their specialties from their countries and unique points of view, which also makes the subjects quite different from when you study at a typical German school. So even the content kind of shifts you to the fact that the students and teachers are from different countries. The teachers are also from different international backgrounds.
About the BA Architecture
The program I am responsible for is the bachelor studies in architecture. What is great about it is the possibility of creating a unique vision that tackles all the issues you may face, in terms of all the basic skills and requirements needed. Beyond that, we can offer a course that goes beyond the typical architecture course because of the international aspect and the way we can shape the course from the start.
Being a small school with smaller cohorts, we can now really hone this program to the special needs our world needs now. The world is shifting with all the environmental issues and other political and sociological problems. We can actually create a course that also addresses these issues from the start, as well as create this holistic, generalist approach, which architecture is.
Being a university of applied sciences, we focus on students gaining knowledge that is practise-based. However, we are also getting an insight into the theoretical and more experimental part of the studies but always going back to what the offerings can do for their professional lives. With the architecture program, the opportunities are highly vast because the base skills we can tap into very different avenues of scenography, theatre, urban design, and landscape design because these aspects are all part of the studies. So, the practical needs and the directions the students can take are covered.
Post-graduation Opportunities
Equally, when the students graduate, they can then choose which direction they would like to go, and in a way, when they prepare the bachelor's thesis, they can already shape the path and profession they would like to take on. And, coming back to the practical connection, we also have a lot of experience in connections with other organizations outside the university where we can link the students to potential job opportunities right after they graduate.
About the City of Berlin
Berlin is obviously the most international place in Germany, so it makes sense for BI to be there. We can say we have a truly international feel, and we have the background that students can actually learn what they need to learn. Berlin as a whole is traditionally a place of culture, politics, arts, music, and architecture. The backdrop of the city offers a unique and special opportunity for the students.
Berlin International offers a truly international experience. The BA Architecture program provides a holistic and creative approach to a discipline that taps into many directions. Berlin unlocks creative potential.”
