Business Studies in Germany Without NC
Navigating the German university admission system can be a daunting task, especially with the Numerus Clausus (NC) playing a significant role. If you are aiming for a spot in popular study programs, understanding the NC is crucial. However, if you are looking for business studies specifically, we have some suggestions for you that do not require the NC.
What is Numerus Clausus (NC)?
The Numerus Clausus (NC) is a system used in Germany to manage the admissions process for university programs with high demand. It essentially refers to a "closed number" of available slots for a course. The NC is determined by the grades students receive in their Abitur, the German high school leaving certificate. When more students apply for a program than there are places available, the university sets an NC limit. Only students with grades equal to or better than this limit are admitted.
How Does NC Work?
- Demand and Supply: If a course has more applicants than available spots, it becomes subject to NC. The NC threshold varies each year and from one university to another, depending on the number and quality of applications.
- Grade-based Selection: The primary criterion is the Abitur grade. For example, if the NC for a business studies program is 1.5, only students with an Abitur grade of 1.5 or better are guaranteed a place.
- Waiting Lists and Additional Criteria: Some universities also consider waiting lists, extracurricular activities, and entrance exams, but the Abitur grade is usually the most critical factor.
Finding Business Studies Without NC
Given the competitive nature of business studies in Germany, many universities enforce NC. Nonetheless, there are opportunities for students to find business studies programs without stringent NC requirements. Berlin International University of Applied Sciences is one of them.
