“Hello, my name is Anaïs Iglesias. I’m from Washington, D.C., and I am in the MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design program. I studied interior design as my undergraduate but have been working in the luxe cosmetic industry for the past five years and felt it was time to return to my core interest and brush up on those skill sets.
The semester has just started and has been fully remote up until now, but I can say that my favorite moment thus far has been in the research seminar. To help break the ice and push dialogue, our professor gave us five minutes to transform a piece of paper into any form. Then we had to present and quickly share the first word that came to mind, and we all ended up having a good laugh.
I chose Berlin International for a variety of reasons. This is a high, global representation which enriching, academically and personally. The prime location in central continental Europe and lastly, a huge criterion for me was the professors. I was highly impressed by their diverse backgrounds, diverse nationalities, global studies, and work experience.
For me, studying in an international environment is the best way to thrive and grow, either in your studies or your personal life. We are all impacted by our surroundings, so when you have a mixed group, everyone brings their own approach and experiences. You could not get that just anywhere. Berlin is a vibrant city. It is a true mixing bowl of nationalities, languages, fashions, and activities. Here, it is okay to be different. I was surprised by how friendly and welcoming the city is to foreigners.
My future plans are to return to interior architecture and interior design with a focus on adaptive reuse - historic preservation. After five years out of the direct industry, I knew it would be best to brush up on my skill sets. I wanted to find a school that could continue to have an international scope and, most importantly, a program that allowed me to focus on my interest in design projects beyond met my criteria.
A few points of advice would be to attend the open houses and ask questions. Everyone is very nice, and it gives you a deeper understanding of the program. Look into the professors’ past experience, and lastly, visit Berlin. I strongly believe in the importance of seeing yourself on campus and experiencing the city, even if it is just for the weekend.
In three words, I describe the MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design program as very focused, interactive, and stimulating. In three words, I describe Berlin as lively, international, and a cultural hub.”
